Missing You

“I have found the one my heart loves.”
– Song of Solomon 3:4
My Inspiration
This fabric collection is a tribute to enduring love, heartfelt devotion, and the quiet strength found in life’s most tender moments. It began with soft pencil-written words of affection on yellowed tablet paper, timeless love letters, lovingly stored in shoeboxes tied with cotton string.
I was inspired by the weathered envelopes of well-traveled airmail, and the deep patriotism of my father-in-love, a veteran who served with pride. But what touched me most was his unwavering devotion to his wife, who battled rheumatoid arthritis from the age of 12. He gave up dreams,
like returning to Amsterdam during R&R, to ensure she had the care she needed.
Their young love stood the test of time. Through all the years apart their devotion was unwavering as they wrote letters to each other every day while he carried out his military service. After his passing, I found those letters and I couldn’t bear to let them go. I never read them until I started to make the quilts. Somehow, it felt enough just to hold onto them.
After Dad entered the nursing home, just three months before the COVID lockdown, I only saw him in person once more before he passed away two years later. Three months after his death, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My world was shaken.
So when Island Batik invited me to design my first original batik collection, the choice was clear: Mom and Dad’s letters. This journey has been one of deep healing, through grief, through illness, and through rediscovery. Finally reading those letters and drawing inspiration from their simple, beautiful stories has helped mend places in my heart I didn’t know were still broken.
This collection is my tribute, to love that lasts, to moments that matter, and to the quiet beauty of handwritten words. May these hand-drawn fabrics evoke your own cherished memories and offer comfort, connection, and peace to all who use them.
